OTB FOUNDATION SUPPORTS UNITED NATIONS’ REFUGEE HOUSING UNITS (RHU) PROJECT TO SUPPORT FAMILIES FORCED TO STAY IN REFUGEE CAMPS FOR YEARS
UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, is a global organization specialized in providing protection and assistance to refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless persons. Today, many families in the Nigerian refugee camps are in urgent need of safe and lasting shelter, away from harsh weather conditions and poor sanitation.
OTB Foundation has donated more than 20 refugee housing units to the UNHCR, offering the opportunity to live in a more dignified and safe way to those who are forced to leave their country of origin.
The Refugee Housing Unit (RHU) is an autonomous, sustainable and durable shelter. Each unit is equipped with modules that compose the bedrooms and a kitchen area, with a locked door and an LED lamp that provides more than six hours of light. These characteristics may seem elementary, but for people who have left their country in despair, they represent a significant milestone in terms of comfort and safety. The units can accommodate up to five people and have a duration of 3 years. The metal steel structure covered with opaque plastic, in addition to a roof and semi-rigid walls, provides refugees with a higher level of independence and privacy. A closed-door on both sides allows the inhabitants of the RHU – women and children in particular – to finally feel safe.
